Frequently Asked Questions
Who can come to the Rolling the Stone Away gathering?
The conference is open to participation by any interested persons. Dozens of prominent leaders and activists of LGBT Christian movements will be invited guests, but anyone is welcome to participate in the formal presentations and informal conversations about our history and the future of our movements.
What are the goals of this gathering?
- To bring together a large cross-section of early leaders of LGBT Christian leaders to tell their stories and preserve their valuable histories.
- To engage in dialogue with present-day LGBT Christian leaders to illumine how the past informs future directions.
- To raise the public visibility of LGBT Christian movements, their profound impact upon social and religious institutions and the challenges they still face.
How does one get invited to be a guest speaker?
The ecumenical planning team is making difficult decisions on which leaders of LGBT Christian movements to invite as special guests—seeking to appropriately represent the many diversities of our movements while working within the limitations of funds available to subsidize these persons’ participation. You can nominate yourself or someone else to be an invited guest by emailing Mark Bowman at email@example.com.
What will happen at this gathering?
The ecumenical planning team is still working on program details, but envisions a mix of plenary presentations and smaller panel discussions in which different LGBT Christian leaders will address various concerns and issues from their work in different decades. All proceedings of the conference will be videorecorded for historical preservation. In addition opportunities will be provided for individual participants to videorecord stories of their personal journeys and achievements. There will be ample time allowed at mealtimes and breaktimes for social interaction and informal conversations with this unprecedented array of elders, saints and prophets.
What does it cost to participate in Rolling the Stone Away?
The registration fee, including participation in all program activities from 4:00 p.m. Tuesday to 12:00 noon on Thursday and all meals from Tuesday dinner through Thursday breakfast, is $280 if paid by September 1, 2017; $330 after that date.
Book your housing directly with the Marriott St. Louis Airport. The room rate is $99 per night (single or double) plus tax.
Are scholarships available?
Yes. The Rolling the Stone Away Planning Team has established a scholarship fund to offer complimentary registrations to a number of STUDENTS, YOUNG ACTIVISTS & SCHOLARS. We understand that such emerging leaders and scholars often have limited financial resources and also believe that their participation in this historic gathering of elders, saints and prophets is critical to ongoing LGBTQIA Christian movements for justice. To apply, submit a scholarship application.
